Why We Use Through Mortise and Tenon Joints

When it comes to crafting gates and doors, the choice of jointing method makes a significant difference in strength, durability, and overall quality. At our workshop, we pride ourselves on using the traditional through mortise and tenon joint, a technique renowned for its superior strength and reliability. This method has stood the test of time and continues to be the gold standard for quality joinery.

However, many modern manufacturers have shifted to alternatives like stub tenons or dowel tenons. These methods are primarily driven by the convenience of CNC machinery, allowing for mass production with minimal skilled labour. While these techniques may be quicker and cheaper to produce, they rely heavily on glue for joint integrity, particularly in the case of dowel tenons.

The Truth About Dowel Tenons

The term "dowel tenon" can be misleading. In reality, this is simply a dowelled joint—a joint reinforced with wooden dowels and adhesive, rather than a true tenon integrated into the structure. Unfortunately, the word "dowel" is often omitted from descriptions, creating the impression of a robust, traditional joint when that is not the case.

While advancements in adhesives have improved their strength, total reliance on glue is no substitute for the time-tested durability of a properly crafted through mortise and tenon joint. Joints that depend entirely on glue are inherently weaker, especially under the strain and exposure gates endure outdoors.

Why Our Method Stands Out

Through mortise and tenon joints offer unmatched stability because they are mechanically interlocked, distributing load and stress effectively throughout the structure. This method reduces reliance on glue and ensures the joint remains strong and secure, even under challenging conditions.

In contrast, stub tenons and dowel joints are faster to produce but compromise long-term durability for short-term convenience. While these alternatives may initially appear sufficient, they cannot match the structural integrity of traditional joinery.

Sustainability Through Craftsmanship

In today’s eco-conscious world, choosing a gate made with through mortise and tenon joints isn’t just about quality—it’s also about sustainability. A gate built with this method will last for decades if properly maintained, reducing the need for frequent replacements. This longevity not only saves you money but also reduces waste, conserves resources, and minimises the environmental impact of manufacturing and disposal.

By investing in a gate crafted with traditional joinery, you’re not just choosing superior craftsmanship—you’re making a choice that aligns with a more sustainable and eco-friendly future.

Investing in Quality

When purchasing a gate or door, it’s essential to consider the craftsmanship behind the product. Opting for a gate built with through mortise and tenon joints is an investment in quality, longevity, and peace of mind. It’s worth doing it right the first time, ensuring your gate not only looks great but also contributes to a more sustainable way of living.

Wood Protection Options

All timber left outside needs protecting against mould, algae, moisture and UV rays. Winder Joinery offer “Full Protection” & “Limited Protection” options for every gate we build. Depending on if you would like a stained or opaque painted finish, we have got you covered.

 Full Protection - Colour: NATURAL
Full Protection - Colour: LIGHT OAK
 Full Protection - Colour: WALNUT

Full Protection - Colour: LIGHT GREY

Full Protection - Colour: MEDIUM GREY

Full Protection - Colour: DARK GREY
Limited Protection - Colour: NATURAL

How does it work?

Our full protection system consists of the gate being treated with Sikkens Cetol HLS and Sikkens Filter 7.

When any “Full Protection” option is chosen we will dip the gate in a bath of Sikkens to get the process started. When the gate is delivered we will include small tins of Sikkens HLS & Filter 7 in the colour of your choice. These chemicals are to be applied to the gate by the customer. This is to avoid scratches or scuffs which may occur in transit.

If "Limited protection” is chosen, the gate will be shipped with a protective dip but no additional top coats will be provided unless they are ordered separately. The colour of the gate will appear Natural. This may be desirable for customers who intend to paint their gate a solid colour, however we must stress the importance of only using oil based primers before painting. We stock "Johnstones Stormshield Flexible Primer" which is the best primer for this task.
